Training and Learning for Community Development

From Relays to Laboratory

The Laboratory in Malmo in October 2008 brings together learning from a series of relay visits which took place from January to May 2008 as part of An exchange on Training and Learning for Community Development

funded by

EAC/61/2006 Key Activity 4: Dissemination and Exploitation of Results. The aims of the relay visits were: (For access to sections and to full reports see below)
  • to transfer lessons from training and learning for Community Development
  • to deepen and build on work done on Training and Learning for Community Development
  • Networking
The relay visits were hosted by Samenlevingsopbouw Vlaanderen; by the Hungarian Association for Community Development, by Community Development Foundation; by the Center for Community Organising and by Kommunales Forum e.V. Hosts each took the shared learning to the next relay point. In addition to the host organizations in Belgium, Hungary, UK, Slovakia and Germany, partners from Bulgaria, Romania, Netherlands, Norway, Ireland, Italy, France and Spain have also participated in these "relays". Full reports on the exchange of experience during each relay are available on this website.
Participants in the relay could see some benefits of cumulative content and growing knowledge from relay to relay. For example discussion of the similarities and differences between "Community Organising" and "Community Development" during the Banska Bystrica relay visit in Slovakia were taken into the Berlin relay and explored in more depth. The relay host partner also involved other participants from universities, adult education and non-governmental organisations. Field visits were included.
The combined experience from these relays will be taken to a "Laboratory" in Sweden in October. Here partners plan to analyse the most significant elements from the exchanges so far. They will experiment with guidelines and priorities for action and policy in the field of training and learning from Community Development.
See below for reports for each relay. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
